Who Wants Love Handles For Christmas?

Staying with the idea of not drinking your calories, it’s that time of the year when you start seeing people with red Starbucks cups in hand, most probably filled with some yummy creation of the devil such as an Eggnog latte or a Gingerbread latte. Here’s some facts about those drinks, and some ways to cut the calories while enjoying some of the taste…on your treat days only 🙂

A large Starbucks Eggnog latte contains 24g of saturated fat – more than the 20g daily limit for a woman recommended by the NHS – and 74g of sugar, the equivalent of 18 teaspoons. Who wants love handles for Christmas? Click the link below and look at the Starbucks picture:

Food For Thought?

It has 579 calories – 140 more than a McDonald’s double cheeseburger, and equivalent to a quarter of a woman’s recommended daily limit. Other Christmas offerings with more calories than a burger include Costa’s Black Forest Hot Chocolate, with a medium cup containing 548. It also has the equivalent of 60g sugar and 26g of fat. A Cinnamon Hot Chocolate at Caffe Nero contains almost 500 calories and the equivalent of 16 teaspoons of sugar. Festive sandwiches from popular chains such as Pret A Manger and EAT fare little better. A Christmas Brie and Cranberry Sandwich from Pret packs 33g of fat, while the Christmas Full Works offering from EAT contains 18g of fat and almost 5 teaspoons of sugar.

If you’re keeping your metabolism up high with regular workouts, Tabata Circuits, Bootcamps or whatever exercise you’re focusing on, then you can get away with the occasional treat. However, please don’t drink these drinks, or eat these foods on a regular basis and then wonder why that belt notch is increasing. If you do order a drink, go for a small one with skimmed milk and don’t go for the cream topping. If there is syrup involved go for the sugar-free versions or ask for half a pump of the syrup. We would rather you didn’t have them at all and went for a black Americano, but we understand it is Christmas and a very occasional treat like this will be burnt off by the furnace of a metabolism you have created/are creating while exercising through December and starting that New Years resolution to get in shape a month early!
